Coke Manufacturing Plants

Khambalia Unit

The Company�s first manufacturing facility, located at Khambalia, Jamnagar, started production of LAM Coke in 1994-95 with 3 chimneys with 48 ovens and an installed capacity of 0.1 million tonnes per annum (MPTA). In the year 1999-00, GNCL added one more chimney with 16 ovens. Then, in 2002-03, it added 1 chimney with 28 ovens by way of capital expansion. The merger of Gujarat NRE Power Ltd's (GNPL) results into addition of 2 more chimneys with 56 ovens. During 2003-04 Aparna Projects Private Limited (APPL) was merged into GNCL resulting in an addition of 3 chimneys with 84 ovens. During the same year, it also underwent a capital expansion thereby adding one more chimney with 28 ovens. The plant is now in operation with 11 chimneys with 260 ovens having an installed capacity of 3.58 lacs MTPA. The company has undertaken extensive water harvesting and created two ponds which store water during the monsoons to be utilized during the dry seasons. This is in addition to contribution for construction of check dams under the Gujarat government's scheme for Public Private Patnership.

Bhachau Unit

In the first quarter of 2004, Gujarat NRE Coke set up a green-field project for manufacture of LAM Coke at Bhachau, in Gujarat having an installed capacity of 0.324 million TPA. The plant is located near the port of Kandla and will facilitate access of the company�s product by the starving North Indian market because of its excellent rail/road connectivity. It uses non-recovery technology of coke manufacture and will utilize the coal from Australia to manufacture coke of the finest quality, known for their low ash content and high calorific value. The new unit consists of 9 chimneys with 260 ovens. The plant started production in March 2004 and reached complete capacity by March 2005. With the new unit fully commissioned, the combined production capacity of the company in Gujarat has reached 0.682 million TPA.

Dharwad Unit

The company has promoted Bharat NRE Coke Limited., which set up a green-field coke oven battery project at Dharwad, Karnataka in a joint venture with Kalyani Steels Ltd. The plant has 8 chimneys and an installed capacity of 0.324 million TPA. The site is situated within a radius of 300 kms from the units consuming coke.

These units will cater to South Indian and Western markets and take the cumulative installed capacity of the group to over 0.1 million TPA.
